I cannot reply or send an email as I get a message saying the SMTP server has timed out.
I have had numerous issues with Thunderbird. he last being it would not receive messages from an email address. That was resolved and I reset the settings all over again. Email was working fine until suddenly I waned to reply to a message. I received this after a while of waiting for teh message to go: Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.1und1.de timed out. Try again.
I tried to correct and verify the SMTP address as per despribed in THunderbird. It only seems to abe relevant to one email address (i.e the list of addresses and ports values is connected with one of my addresses and not the one I am having an issue with presently. However the only listed is problematical when I use it. Using the ports names and values shown it still failed to send messages
PLease advise how this can be rectified

It did not work. It still timed out when I changed the SMTP addresses. Even changed the port but to no avail
It still timed out when I changed the SMTP addresses.
Clear as mud. What have you changed? And why did you change something in the first place? Did you follow the instructions from the article? If so, what's the result for every single step?
I changed the address for SMTP and ports, and went back to how it was before the issue started. That is what makes it so strange. Same settings for SMTP but it now times out, no matter what is changed.

Try getting rid of your anti virus or firewall. Or to put it politely.
To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try one of the following:
- Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
- Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
- If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.
Hello Mat. I tried both solutions you suggested. It sill timed out with the Mozilla solution. Windows solution dropped the internet connection on pressing F5 as suggested for safe mode with networking. Very frustrating
Thank you for your assistance
WLAN will get disabled in safe mode. Make sure to use a wired connection.
I had the same problem, with Spectrum. They for some reason blocked me from sending any emails through my VPN. Once I got off my VPN, all was well. If you are traveling, the same may happen to you if you are on Spectrum.
