I keep getting a pop-up that asks if I want to mark messages as read from (usually) the previous day.

This problem has just started in the past couple of weeks. I've had Thunderbird for years and never was continually given a pop-up option to mark messages as read. I don't want the pop-up and if I'm not careful in declining each time, it could really screw up the organization of my emails. Where'd this pop-up come from and how do I make it go away?

I'd rather not capture a screen shot as there is more in the screenshot than the pop-up. But in detail: It's about an 1 1/2 slightly rectangle that says

Mark messages as Read by Date Mark messages as Read from (blank)

                                 To 9/13/2016

OK (highlighted) Cancel (not highlighted)

You can trim a screenshot, and blur things you might not wish to share.

I can't recall ever seeing that message in Thunderbird, so I wonder if you have an add-on causing it, or some third-party software.

I have pasted the screenshot below.

Ah! I have never seen that dialogue, but I have now seen that if you select multiple messages and right-click them, there is a menu option Mark|As Read By Date.

So your pop up is from within Thunderbird. So the puzzle is why it pops up spontaneously. I probably wouldn't trigger it because I don't leave messages as Unread.

Do you actually keep unread messages for multiple days?

Thanks for the prompt reply, Zenos. Yes, I keep messages marked as unread that require more attention than I have to give at the moment or are a billing-which keeps it highlighted to remember. I've never had this pop-up problem in years of Thunderbird use. I did try disabling add-ons to see if that helps. But only time will tell on that solution.

Looking on the menu I see the shortcut is C no alt or anything else (all read is shift+C). So my guess is you are pressing that key when you have messages selected in the list.

Thanks, Matt. but that is definitely not what's happening. I stay away from the keyboard and use only the mousepad in Thunderbird. The pop-up just occurs like one of those irritating reminders from your anti-virus to update...

What do you have for all settings in this location. 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > 'Display' > 'Advanced' tab

Post image if it helps.

Toad-hall, What am I looking for? I went into advanced via your instructions and I didn't see anything related to saving, marking as read or deleting messages (by default.)

In older versions of Thunderbird, the info I'm talking about was in this location: Via Menu Bar 'Tools' > 'Options' > 'Advanced' > 'Reading & Display' or Via Mail Toolbar 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > 'Advanced' > 'Reading & Display' see first image below

More recent version of thunderbird has the info here: Via Menu Bar 'Tools' > 'Options' > 'Display' > 'Advanced' tab Via Mail Toolbar 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > 'Display' > 'Advanced' tab see second image below.
