I am a devoted user of Firefox but I have been experiencing constant crashes and am computer illiterate. The crashes seem to occur with my primary ISP e-mail account at cincinnatibell.net. It does not occur at all when I use my free web-based e-mail accounts such as the one given here, only with Cincinnati Bell Zoomtown E-Mail. When I try to log in to my mailbox I receive a unresponsive script notice which reads-Script: chrome://wrc/content/common/scripts/bal.js:854 I have contacted the ISP and they find nothing wrong on their end passing the blame back on me and my system to wit, my browser Firefox. They even tried to enter the mailbox using IE to no avail. The only reason I am able to respond to the e-mail from you was I clicked on Continue of the notice screen and it let me continue magically for some reason. How long this will last is anyone's guess. I am at a standstill in performing some of the steps to correct this but my computer skills are zero. Please help me with this as I enjoy Firefox and do not want to change to another browser. Any assistance must be very simple, step by step understandable by an infant. Thanks and please do not hesitate to contact me and hopefully I can end this constant fixing and enjoy my computer. I have as my OS Windows XP Professional Home 32Bit SP3. I try to keep any updates current but have difficulty even installing some like Adobe.

hello latierradeltoro, can you try to replicate this behaviour when you launch firefox in safe mode once? if not, maybe an addon is interfering here...

please follow along this article in order to test that: Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems

Many thanks to both Philipp and Waka_Flame_Flame for responding. Since both of you answered at approximately the same time may I address both of you together? Boy, all of this is way over my head and I'm overwhelmed already. I checked the status of my add-ons and the Adobe Flash Player v 11.9.900.117 needs to be updated to v 11.9.900.152 which may be causing the difficulty explained in my original post of 12-02-2013. I have tried several methods to download the new version from the add-on page to the Adobe web site and all it does is go to step 2 and just stalls. I cannot get it to perform for some reason. Do either of you know what else I can try to get the new version for this addon? Please let me know before I get into shark infested waters with my poor computer skills. Thanks so much again. can you get adobe flash to install from this link?: https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/installation-problems-flash-player-windows.html#main-pars_header
choose the Flash Player Plug-in (All other browsers) one...

Can you list your extensions (Help > Troubleshooting Information)?

Errors with a chrome://wrc/content/common/scripts/ like this are a problem with an extension that starts with a "w" (wrc).

Did you try Safe Mode?

Note that safe mode disables extensions, but doesn't effect plugins.

phillipp, sorry additional. Haven't tried Safe Mode yet. Have done it once with help. Does that you try to see if script problem occurs i.e. when I try to log and operate my primary e-mail as described in earlier post.

It seems to be caused by the "Avast Online Security" extension. Try to disable it- I don't think that doing so will stop your antivirus from working Happy Holidays!

Hi jackburn,

Thank you so much for the assistance through your post of 12/25/2013. In checking my addons and extensions I saw the Avast Online Security listed. With all due respect, I subscribe to Avast's support package where they can connect with me remotely and delve into issues. I recently contacted them when a few days ago I had a huge crash that Windows closed the entire computer down to protect it then re-booted it. The technician determined that was caused by an overheating problem I have been experiencing for some time probably due to an aging components problem. I have placed a small fan near the ventilation grills to supplement the CPU fan to keep the temps under control using Speccy, a Piriform product someone installed for me years ago. I can reduce it to the workbar at the bottom on the screen and toggle bacx and forth to check on readings for CPU, Motherboard and Hard Drive. While you don't feel it would leave me without protection I believe I should check with them first before disabling the extension especially for a long period of time to test this action. As I'm certain you are aware, going "Barefoot" in this day and age would be disastrous. Thanks again my friend and I will keep you posted as to what transpires. It seems all I do is fix this thing resulting in not enjoying the benefits. Probably on the terminal list but would make it a nice boat anchor or paperweight. Belated Merry Christmas to you and thank you for your kind efforts on my behalf. Greatly appreciated.

Dear jackburn,

I seem to be having difficulty in getting to the forum. I wrote you on 12-26-2013 from here and was wondering if you received my letter. These things twist me in knots. I contacted Avast support and they said disabling the extension would be risky as it would block my protection. I have not experienced a crash lately but Firefox is very slow and I got a message at the bottom of my screen to that effect. I looked at the Health Report at the top of the screen and yesterday it registered almost a minute in initiating Firefox. I guess that's another issue. I would appreciate hearing from you on how to get directly to the forum if that's the thing to do or continue this method. Sorry for being such a pain but my computer abilities are so limited. Do let me know if you get this as I'm not certain if I'm contacting properly. Thanks and take care.

in regard to your, " I contacted Avast support and they said disabling the extension would be risky as it would block my protection. " I went solely by the above Avast Forum that says,

"If you look through the forum you will find the AOS extension seems to have caused issues for a lot of users, and many of us have disabled or completely removed it. If you remove or disable it, you are still protected by the Web shield." http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=142848.0

I would quote that to Avast support & see what they say....

The other Mozilla link suggests a possible Firefox add-on replacement -but I have no knowledge about it https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/que.../979446
