Most times after deleteing an email, it re-appears again--how can I stop this happening?
Most emails that I have deleted keep appearing as 'new' emails. I usually have to wait many days before I can delete these emails so that they don't reappear! How can I stop this repetition from occurring? Am using Thunderbird 38.2

re :BUT your instructions on how to 'compact Folders automatically' doesn't seem to be correct
The instructions were how to do it manually. Just to clarify: To manually compact a particular folder: right click on folder and select 'Compact'
To manually compact all your folders: via 'Menu Bar' 'File' > select: 'Compact Folders'
via 'Mail Toolbar' 'Menu icon; > 'File' > select: 'Compact Folders'
To set up an automatic compacting of folders: via 'Menu Bar' 'Tools' > 'Options' > 'Advanced' > 'Network & Disc Space' tab
via 'Mail Toolbar' 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > 'Advanced' > 'Network & Disc Space' tab
Under 'Disc Space' section. select: 'Compact all folders when it will save over eg:10MB in total' I recommend you set the amount to a low figure to encourage more frequent compacting. click on 'OK'
I note that you say you are using Thunderbird version 40.0.3.
The current version released is 38.2.0. Perhaps you were looking at the Firefox browser version?

Deleted emails are 'marked as deleted' and hidden from view. You would only see them in the 'Deleted' or 'Trash' folder. This means that if you accidentally deleted an email, you can easily get it back.
To remove all traces of 'marked as deleted' emails you should be compacting your folders.
If you start to get emails reappearing, this might mean you have a corrupted folder. So, as a precaution, please do all of the following.
Inbox: Delete all unwanted messages. Move all good emails out of the Inbox into suitable folders, so the Inbox is empty.
Right click on Junk folder and select 'Empty Junk' Right click on Deleted folder and select 'Empty deleted'
then compact all folders. File > select 'Compact folders'
Allow a little time for this to occur - it is usually quite quick.
See info on compacting and why it is important:
