Cannot update beta in Linux
Using Linux Mint 18, with firefox-next PPA installed, I am unable to get updates for the beta installation. This is the only version installed, and do not run multiple versions of Firefox. I am on the beta channel, but the message says that 'updates are available at https://mozilla.org/firefox/ which wants to install the regular version. Please help to correct this problem and improve the beta installation and update for Linux

The Firefox folder whether on Windows, Mac OSX or Linux needs read/write permission in order to do updates.
If you are the only user on Linux then a simple place to put the tarbal version is in a folder in /home/username/foldername/. Then there is no need to be su or root to do update or make folder have read/write permissions then

Where did you install the beta version?
You would have to run Firefox as root to have write permissions for its install location if Firefox isn't able to update automatically.
cor-el, the link you provided is the same as where I downloaded the tar file. And thanks for pointing out to run Firefox as root. It immediately updated.
Will I have to do this for all future updates?

Thanks to all, for some important clarifications. I was concerned that if I install it in my home folder, it won't update because the update mechanism is not aware of its existence. That was my previous experience when I had the beta installed in the home folder. Would a symlink to usr/share/applications resolve that?
