if my desktop has been turned on and the emails opened and I then open the emails on my laptop all the emails are deleted from the laptop.

Chosen solution

let me guess a POP mail account on the desktop that deletes mail from the server on download and an IMAP mail account on the laptop that synchronizes with the now empty server.
