using thunderbird to access gmail account

i'm using TB to access my gmail account but I do not want to have to put up with TB downloading email into some of the gmail mail boxes that I do not use e.g. important. Can I just remove these email boxes in TB so that valuable resources are not taken up doing things that I don't want or need? Thank you Allen
