How to permanently turn off default sort by threaded - I do not want any threads ever. How to set default to always display messages/results unthreaded? Is there an option to do so in about:config?

You can file a bug or enhancement request in https://bugzil.la/ to request this feature. Without that, there is very little chance that this behavior is changed.

Threaded is not a default view of mail. If you have it you selected it somehow.

View Menu > sort by > unthreaded.

Perhaps I should clarify: The default in search results window is threaded. I am looking for an option to permanently set search results default to unthreaded.

Which "search" are you using?

search results.... is that the search using Ctrl+K, Shift+Crtl+K or the search using Ctrl+F. When there are multiple option for searching clarity is difficult to get.

But I do not recall seeing a thread in any of them by default.

I suspect that is Global Search. I can't be sure because I use an enhanced search that maps Global Search onto the QuickFilter bar.

ISTR that the "open email as list" option in the global search results defaults to a threaded display. This particular window is impervious to user default settings such as additional columns, sorting order or other sorting preferences. :-(

Personally I cannot imagine managing email without threading. But then I don't habitually top-post.

Yes, the threading occurs when using the "open email as list" view. I have missed countless emails because of threading. Also this threading screws up list if you want to the sort by date – even when threads are expanded the dates are not properly chronological. I really hope there is a way to ungroup/unthread without having to manually View > Sort by > Unthread everytime :-(

At the moment it is not possible to change this behavior. It is hard coded in the program to always show the results threaded in a new tab.

Thanks for update. I hope this will change in a near future release.

The OP said "permanently". That button seems to de-activate if you close and re-open the search results tabular window. :-(

True, but this is a quicker temporary fix than to change your search parameters every time.

I see you filed bug 1466892 ! Let's hope somebody picks it up…

One more thing you can try as a temporary workaround. You can install my add-on ThreadKey and use a single keypress of "U" to switch to unthreaded view. There used to be a problem with assignments of a single key for the Mac, but I think that problem has long been solved.

Thanks, I'll give that a go.
