While installing a new phone, my firefox account got messed up and the recovery codes I had saved earlier don't work. So, the only way is to create a new e-mail address, just for syncing purposes, but now the account won't add other equipment, phone etc. there seems to be confusion as to which account to use. Most of the time it ask for the old account, and changing to the new account results in PW unknown (even though this was correctly recorded). Logging into the account to get mail from scratch is possible, but any referred login fails (i.e., I tried to get Moz VPN to work, but it asked for the old e-mail address, and changing it to the new address gives PW failure). On top of that, the authenticator doesn't generate 6 digit codes but 8, so that route can't be used either.

Hope someone can advise how to escape this mess.

You can't sync two different firefox account using sync that isn't what it does. To change the Primary email you need access to the email account that was used to register for firefox account and if you have no access then that is considered a lost account. You left with making a new account and not using the lost account to do your sync with the new account instead.
