My emails are overloading my server capacity because they will not completely transport to my PC via Thunderbird. When I delete at the server they are deleting on my pc as well. So what I am actually doing is viewing my emails on my server via thunderbird.

I figured out how to adjust settings so I can erase at the server and the emails on my pc are staying on my pc with them being erased. I found this in tools > account settings and options,

I have the same problem with my sent messages; My sent messages are using up disk space as well and when I deleted at the server, I was deleting them on the pc. I can not find where I need to keep them on the pc and delete and keep them from storing on the server prompt to remedy the situation.

Suggest:

Make sure your subscribed folders are set to synchronise, so that you have a copy in thunderbird.

then go into 'offline mode' to stop any further synchronising.

then move emails into suitable folders in 'Local Folders' mail account.

when you have checked that the emails are definately in Local Folders, you can delete them off the server.

As you now have emails in 'Local folders' mail account, they will be your only copy, so backup your entire Profile or backup your folders as mbox files.

After backing up emails/profile. go back into 'online' mode.

A useful addon tool for exporting folders as mbox files.
