Why doesn't Firefox provide the option of tabs below menu bar?

Firefox keeps changing what is necessary in the userChrome.css file in order to place tabs below the Menu and Bookmark toolbars. Because of this, there are so many different versions of the code that must be added to that file that it has become virtually impossible to keep up with it.

It would be so much simpler for users if the Tabs below Menu/Bookmark toolbar option was again made an option. Failing that, would someone please publish the code currently necessary to accomplish this with Firefox 72.01.

If your current code to get the tabs on bottom isn't working in Firefox 72 then see my reply in this thread:

You're "beating a dead horse" that expired years ago, when Firefox 29 Australis came out in April 2014 and the "Tabs on Bottom" pref & code was removed from Firefox.

The base code for the user interface is slowly being changed version-by-version from XUL to XHTML. And that slow process may not be complete for quite a few additional versions.

If you can't stand the "heat" of dealing with userChrome.css "stay out of the kitchen" and use Firefox as designed!

Take a look over here for the latest batch of code or the individual changes that are needed: https://old.reddit.com/r/FirefoxCSS/

Thank you very much for your reply.

However, given all the alternatives and corrections thereto, I still don't know which thread will give me the complete and correct code for the userChrome.css file that will produce tabs below the menu/bookmark bar. Many threads make no distinction between tabs at the bottom of the aforementioned toolbars and tabs at the bottom of the web page.

Pardon my ignorance, but why isn't it possible to update Fifefox without affecting the operation of the code for tabs control in the UserChrome.css file?

What wrong with You? I should start looking for other browser? This is not the first time you're doing something in spite of users.

Personally I don't mind having the tabs above the address bar, but I know that many people do (and I can see why).

People shouldn't have to use code (that'll change with every update) and I totally agree with those who think that this should be an option to either have tabs under or above the address bar. Useful features are being removed, and useless features are added (well : useful and useless to different people - what one likes, the other one hates)

Just in case anybody wants to file a bug report and request that this option will be added (again) :

This ability was removed a while ago (see bug 755593) when the Firefox UI changed. The developers cited maintenance costs and "usability concerns" as the primary reasons for the feature removal.

Unfortunately, it looks like the feature is unlikely to make a return in the near future (see bug 1601164), but you can still make the necessary changes with a userChrome.css file. I don't think the developers are going to even consider introducing this feature again because no other mainstream browser (with the exception of Safari) has tabs on the bottom.

Many thanks for the replies. Perhaps I am beating a dead horse, but I would nevertheless like to continue to do so as long as I can in the hope that a live one that meets my preferences becomes available to ride.

In the interim, I would greatly appreciate it if someone would provide a link that contains the necessary code to add to the userChrome.css file that will place tabs below the menu/bookmark bar and will work with FF 72.01.

Success!

Thank you so very much. Hopefully this code will continue to work for a long time with future versions of Firefox.
