Graphics Don't Paste into MS Word from Firefox v26 for Mac OSX 10.9.4

My problem was supposed to be solved in version 13. I am using Version 26. for Mac OSX 10.8.4. When I cut and past a graphic into MS word or another similar application. The graphic does not paste.. It is only a FF OSX problem. Safari work OK. V 26 is the most recent OSX version.

Hi Old MacOSX86 Guy, sorry about that unrelated reply.

I am only personally familiar with this issue on Windows. Firefox places multiple formats on the clipboard when you right-click > Copy Image including bitmap data for the image and HTML tags to link to the image online. I assume Mac works somewhat similarly.

When pasting, the receiving application will select its preferred format from the Windows clipboard. Again, I assume Mac works somewhat similarly. Although earlier versions of Firefox removed some unnecessary formats from the clipboard, HTML is still available and Microsoft Word seems to prefer HTML, at least on my systems.

Word has a featured called Paste Special. Depending on your version of Word, this may be on the ribbon (where it appears on a menu you can drop down below the large clipboard icon) or on the Edit menu. This should let you paste the bitmap data.

Unfortunately, some other apps do not have a similar feature to choose among what is available on the clipboard, and in those cases, you might need to use either:

  • Drag and drop the image from the page into the receiving application
  • Save Image As and then open or embed the image from your system

Unfortunately that did not help. I do have access to paste special. I did give me the option of using HTML., but the graphics from the page I copied did not paste. I tried with both control c + control v[actually on the MAC it's command c] and with "copy" and with "paste" from right click menus. Neither worked. It isn't only MS Word that has the problem. There is a Mac OSX app called Bean[much like word]. It doesn't work with bean either. About 1 year ago, perhaps more, it did work. My work around is to use Windows orwith Firefox or to use Safari with Mac OSX.

THANKS for your insight.

Is the problem copying a large area of the page, or an individual image?

For a large area of the page, what Word will try to do is read the HTML and independently retrieve the images. If you turn on viewing of field codes after pasting (try Option+F9 to toggle between codes and results) do you see INCLUDEPICTURE fields where the missing images should be? Do the URLs look correct? Note that if the image is surrounded by a link, the INCLUDEPICTURE field might not be visible.

For an individual image, was "Device Independent Bitmap" or similar available on Word's Paste Special menu? If so, try that.

If that wasn't listed, when you right-click the image in Firefox, is "Copy Image" available? If not, the desired image could be a background image. You may need to save it from the Page Info dialog instead. Either:

  • right-click and choose View Page Info > Media panel
  • Tools menu > Page Info > Media panel

You can scroll down through the media until you find the one you want and use the Save As button to save it to disk.

Any luck with dragging the selected text instead of using the clipboard?

There have always been issues reported on Mac with pasting formatted text from the clipboard and I assume that this still isn't fixed properly.

I am trying to copy about a page of text and graphics. I reformat, paginate and print out things of lasting value. I am able to read them better than on the screen. I do not have a save image available when I have highlighted/copied text & multiple graphics. I did not see INCLUDE PICTURE. When I did Option F9 word displayed {hyperlink" plus a URL to the article not to the graphic}

Perhaps it is not fixed for OSX. I would have expected more recent complaints if other had the problem. I will see what folks on MAC OSX forums think. Thanks you your very technical explanation of the processes. I'm sure that information will come in handy to me in the future. In the mean time, I'll just have to use Safari

I am not sure I mention: An upgrade of FF broke this. Don't recall which upgrade. It used to work.

I wasn't able to drag in the graphics. Sorry.
