The bookmarksdrop down menu is too large in that it covers most of my screen - how can I make it smaller.
Whenever I select the Bookmarks drop down menu, it is so big that it covers most of my screen. Then, when I go to a folder in the drop down menu if I pause at any other folder it opens and is so big that the drop down menu is completely covered. This is VERY irritating and I never had this problem before upgrading to Firefox 5.0. How do I cure it?? I am using a MacBook with a 13" screen

That is probably because you have one or more bookmarks with a long title.
The width of a column in the Bookmarks menu list is in current Firefox versions automatically adjusted to fit the bookmark with the longest name.
You can check the names of the bookmarks and make the longer ones shorter.

I purposely made my bookmark menu reach further down and be wider, but I'm only usually looking for one bookmark if I use the bookmarks menu or bookmarks toolbar menus.
But to get several bookmarks or just to be able to see the web page at the same time use the bookmarks sidebar [Command +B] which can be toggled on/off by its keyboard shortcut. You also have the AwesomeBar like search available to you allow you search on strings of character matching on anything in the title and/or url in you bookmarks.
That does help, but I am still not able to use the bookmark drop down menu from the toolbar. is there a way to reduce the width of the drop down menu when accessed from the toolbar?
Install the Stylish extension, restart of Firefox is probably required, then install the style.
- Stylish :: Add-ons for Firefox
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/stylish/ - Change width of bookmark and bookmark toolbar menu - Themes and Skins for Browser
http://userstyles.org/styles/4415
Bring up Add-ons ( "Ctrl+Shift+A") , and in the click on Styles menu on left (great big S on the icon), then on the style installed, choose edit Change both lines with 500px to 250px and save. Results are immediate so test.
Stylish is definitely overkill if you only want one style, but there are a lot of styles that you can use. To see some that I use take a look at
My style
- Bookmarks Toolbar Fx4 Blue/Folders, Red/Bookmarks - Themes and Skins for Browser
http://userstyles.org/styles/46947
includes similar code you would have to change 36em to 250px
The alternative would be paste the modified lines from "Show Code" within style 4415 into your own chrome/userChrome.css file that you would have to create within your profile directory, save and restart Firefox.
Thanks folks, but still no luck. I tried both suggestions above with no luck. When I have the drop down menu open, if I move the cursor through the menu too slowly, it will open the first folder it passes. When the folder opens, it is bigger than the actual drop down menu and as a result I have to start everything over again. Prior to upgrading to Firefox 5.0, if I stopped the cursor over a folder, the folder contents would show alongside the drop down menu rather than on top of it.

Set to 250px as maximum, you should be getting rather uniform widths, try testing with a different maximum maybe setting both maximums to 175px since you can easily put it back up higher, just to see if it changes. Since you have "Stylish" and installed the style it is easy to change and retest. I think it will override the one you may still have in userChrome.css
You can overlay a grid onto your page so you can see the widths of the drop-down bookmarks. don't install his toolbar, keyword shortcut work a lot better, just click on "grid" (shaded bookmarklet) to test, then drag it up to your bookmarks toolbar. To invoke later. You can assign a keyword shortcut to it like "grid" or "grid:" and tuck it away in a folder out of sight, and just type in "grid:" when you want to invoke it.

My problem with the Bookmarks is that when I scroll down the Bookmarks drop-down menu, ALL the folders open and stay open until I shut down Firefox. It is almost impossible to navigate the Bookmarks menu. This has only happened since the upgrade to Firefox 5.0
