Firefox has just updated all of twenty minutes ago. After updating, it ceased to display web pages, despite being connected to the internet. This is occuring despite having been tried with both wireless and hard line connections. What gives?

Hi,

You can consider the Reset Firefox feature via Help (Alt + H) > Troubleshooting Information.

(To revert to the previous profile you were using, close the new profile (i.e. exit Firefox), start Firefox and choose the Default User profile. While the Profile Manager is open, you can also delete the newly reset profile (the one containing random numbers), or the former profile, as the case may be). If the reset is okay, it would be a good idea to delete the old profile as otherwise it would be left intact with the previous data until deleted.

Managing profiles

Profiles Howto

If you have security software (antivirus, firewall etc.) installed, you can try deleting all existing instances of Firefox and its related files in all the different configuration areas/modules of the security software like process monitoring, sub/spawned process control, virtualization etc. in addition to the main AV/Firewall module. Instead create new fully allowed/trusted rules for Firefox + its related processes. Even otherwise some security software may also ask again when Firefox is started and you can try to allow/trust at that time. Please see this.

Tried both of those. Neither of them worked; I keep getting an "Unable to display page" cropping up when I try and access something using Firefox.

Here's the thing: It's ONLY Firefox, and it's only been since it updated. I have tried resetting Firefox, resetting its privlages in both Avast and Windows Firewall, and even reinstalling it. None of that works to fix the problem, forcing me to use IE in the meantime.

If Firefox was being run sandboxed or virtualized it may not have updated properly. The Avast forum may also have helpful information regarding the specific Avast version.

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.
