Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Open Firefox -> Help Menu -> select "Restart with Add-ons Disabled"

Firefox will close then it will open up with just basic Firefox. Check if its working. You can enable the Add-ons later.

My problem is solved before reading this answer ( sorry ) by removing all the add-ons that were said not suitable for firefox 5 and removal of a probably by my son installed obscure toolbar. after this a fresh startup and all OK.

Thank you for help!

Bert.

Some users are finding it is the Babylon toolbar causing this, anyone wish to confirm this, or say something else causes the problem ?
