The advantages of installing through the Play store include:
- Compatibility checking built-in
- Automatic updating
But if you want to manage these issues for yourself, yes, you can download the APK's from Mozilla's releases archive:
https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mobile/releases/latest/android-api-11/ (for Android 3.x-5.x, I think)
https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mobile/releases/latest/android-api-9/ (for Android 2.3, I think)
There are individual folders for different languages/locales. If you cannot find the folder for your preferred language, do you want to mention which one it is?
Note: Android might need a setting change to "sideload" apps from unofficial sites. I have forgotten how to do that but you probably can find it in a web search for your device/Android version. That is NOT the same as rooting your device. For security reasons, I do NOT recommend rooting your device unless you are a very sophisticated user.
