Under 3 line menu, customize button is blank. I have disabled add ons, Bookmark totally blank, bookmark toolbar doesn't do anything when checked. All websites I go to will first say not responding and hang there. The cursor circles for some time before reloading; reloading time is slow.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.

See also:

If the Places Maintenance extension can't repair the places.sqlite database then remove all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Make sure toolbars like the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible. Open the Customize window and set what toolbars (Show/Hide Toolbars) and toolbar items to display.

  • Right-click empty toolbar area -> Customize
  • "3-bar" menu button -> Customize
  • View -> Toolbars
    *you can tap the Alt key or press the F10 key to show the hidden Menu Bar temporarily
  • check that "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize palette to the Customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if missing items are in the Customize palette then drag them back from the Customize window to the toolbar
  • if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the Customize palette then click the Restore Defaults button in the Customize palette window to restore the default toolbar set.

Hi nicolepan,

That is not working like it is supposed to. Please first make a back up of your profile (Bookmarks and things)

Second, try a clean Firefox re-install. Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove your Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. This process does not remove your Firefox profile data (such as bookmarks and passwords) since that information is stored in a different location.

To do a clean reinstall of Firefox, please follow these steps: Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu New Fx Menu and click the close button Close 29).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.

WARNING: Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your Firefox profile data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device! See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.

Please report back to say if this helped you!

Thank you.

First of all, wanted to say thank you to guigs and cor-rel for their help. thanks! My problem is solved. Let me summarize it for other users facing similar problems.

Problem- Bookmark missing, bookmark toolbar missing. reinstalled firefox but didn't work. Installed places maintenance but couldn't get pass checking registry.

The method that worked - 1. Downgraded to firefox version 54 and the bookmark came back (do not update to firefox V55 first!) 2. Go to windows 10 > control panel >System and Security > Security and Maintanence > troubleshooting> system and security> fix problems with windows update> click next> try troubleshooting as an administrator (let it run and fix all possible problems) 3. Open firefox V54 and let it update to the latest version V55. The bookmarks and the bookmark toolbar should still be there 4. Go to the right side 3 bars> add ons>download places maintenance, options > click next (it should say - "The database is sane. Next I will do some clean-up.")>click next 5. Done

If above fixes your problem, then good for you!
