What is happening with Thunderbird Sync?

We are building our own sync storage server and it is taking some time to set it up and test. We will let you know when it is available for public pre-release testing.

What is happening with Exchange Support?

If you are a thrill seeker who knows how to backup and restore your Thunderbird profile (email, address book, etc), you can try our pre-beta version of Exchange support. Full instructions are available at: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Exchange

Why is Thunderbird 128 labeled as 128.0esr when previous versions were not called ESR?

In short: Thunderbird 128.0esr is the same release channel as Thunderbird 115, only the name has changed. This channel gets a yearly major feature release as always.

For 128, we added “ESR”(which stands for Extended Support Release) to the name because we’re introducing a new monthly feature release channel similar to the Firefox Rapid Release channel. So we needed to distinguish between that and the yearly channel. Since Firefox calls their yearly release “ESR”, we opted to do the same.

For many years, due to lack of development resources, Thunderbird had no monthly feature release at all. There was only Beta. During that time, it wasn’t necessary to use the “ESR” label.

Going forward, there will be four Thunderbird channels:

  • Daily: Updates every day with the latest changes directly from development branches, for bleeding edge testers.
  • Beta: Major updates every 4 weeks, after testing on Daily. Provides testing for final release branches.
  • Release: Major updates every 4 weeks, containing everything that was tested on Beta the previous month.
  • Extended Support Release (ESR): Major updates once per year, minor and security updates the rest of the time, with support extending for ~15 months after a major update.

The new monthly feature release channel will be available for testing and use later this year.

Why are my Thunderbird customizations broken in 128?

If your customization required changes to userChrome.css, userContent.css, or other related files, then these userChrome* customizations are still unsupported in 128 (they were also unsupported in 115 and all previous releases). There may be solutions in the forums but please remember these are unofficial; unsupported solutions and could break at any time.
