Hi all: The following question is from Zendesk. I am adding it here so we can have the benefit of a public discussion with our awesome Thunderbird Support Community.

tl;dr Try [[Troubleshoot Mode Thunderbird|Thunderbird Troubleshoot mode|] and see if that helps. Also try disabling all 3rd party software (e.g.anti-virus, firewalls, etc). If it is a password issue, please ask your email provider e.g. Optus or gmail to reset the password for you. Double check your Optus settings at: https://www.optus.com.au/support/answer?id=1434 and double check your gmail settings: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-and-gmail

We've found over the years that troubleshooting is often difficult. It would probably speed things up if you could find somebody who's more technical in your community to help you in real life.

If the tl;dr doesn't help, please give us more troubleshooting details (without this level of detail we can't help you further):

  1. Please let us know your email provider, is it gmail, optus or both?
  2. Please let us know what operating system e.g. macOS Ventura, Windows 11, Ubuntu 22.04
  3. Please let us know what 3rd party software like add-ons, anti-virus or firewalls you are using (and please try disabling them and see if that helps)
  4. Finally, please let us know what steps you followed exactly, what you expected and what actually happened.

Text from Zendesk:

Hello,

I want to get away from Outlook and, therefore, downloaded Thunderbird. However, I cannot connect it to my GMX account.

When I try to add the account it finds the details but then gives me an error message that the configuration, password or username are wrong. Password and username are definitely correct, as I can use them to get into my online GMX account. Regarding the configuration / account settings they seem to be the ones I have always used, but I have tried others, which also do not work. I found a reply in Support to a similar problem by Toad Hall from the 17th July 2023. I went through all the suggestions but nothing has solved the problem.

I tried the configuration given (see below) but Thunderbird does not seem to be able to connect with them either.

  • Incoming: imap.gmx.com
  • port: 993
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication Method: Normal Password
  • User Name: full email address
  • Password - same one you use to access webmail account
  • Outgoing: mail.gmx.com
  • port: 587 (instead of 465 with SSL/TLS)
  • Connection Security: STARTTLS
  • Authentication Method: Normal Password
  • User Name: full email address
  • Password - same one you use to access webmail account

It does NOT prompt for a password. The Activity Manager is empty. The firewall shows all permissions for Thunderbird given. I have used this GMX account for years.

I have created a file with screen shots of the individual steps in setting up a new e-mail account and the error messages I am getting. I don’t know whether that would be useful, but I cannot see how to attach it.

Many thanks

Hello,

I'm having trouble opening mail from a remote folder.

I ran this command to authorize the removable media: sudo snap connect thunderbird:removable-media :removable-media

If I mount my remote folder via fstab with this configuration, I can open remote mail with Thunderbird:

user@server:remote_folder/ /media/user/remote_folder fuse.sshfs noauto,x-systemd.device-timeout=5,x-systemd.mount-timeout=5,x-systemd. automount,follow_symlinks,rw,_netdev,users,idmap=user,uid=1000,gid=1000,IdentityFile=/home/user/.ssh/id_rsa,allow_other,reconnect,ServerAliveInterval=5,ServerAliveCountMax=1 0 0

On the other hand, if I mount the same remote folder with the sshfs command :

sshfs -o idmap=user user@server:remote_folder /media/user/remote_folder -o follow_symlinks

Unable to open mail.

Would you have an idea, please?

Thanks for you answer.

Hi. I'm not getting any new emails into my account since I installed the latest Update. I know it must be to do with Thunderbird as opposed to my email as I am receiving emails on my mobile. I'm not tech savvy and don't know what to do. I've checked in the settings and all appears to be ok. I can send emails but they don't save in sent items nor do they appear in my inbox if I copy myself in. However they do appear in my email account on my mobile. Starting to feel a bit stressed... If anyone able to give me any ideas I'd appreciate it. Many thanks Rachel

I'm unable to send any email with Thunderbird on my new Windows11 laptop. I've used Thunderbird for years and years on the old Windows10 one, but it won't send anything with the new one. The version info it gives is "128.5.1esr (64-bit)" Whenever I try to send an email message, it waits a long long time and then gives a popup saying "Login to server smtp.mail.yahoo.com with username bill.marshall@verizon.net failed." It gives me an option to enter a new password, and if I click there it doesn't let me enter the password again, just re-tries, again waits a long long time, then gives the same error popup. When I cancel, it gives a new popup saying to check the password and verify the 'Authentication method' in Account Settings. Authentication method looks fine, but the password (Settings->SavedPasswords) is empty (?? But I entered the password when I started Thunderbird and asked it to save it).

I have Thunderbird in classic view. So catalogs on the left and list of inbox on the right and below the list the view of the mail's content in a preview. Every time I start Thunderbird, the inbox appears in the list. I have sorted that the latest email in the inbox is last in the list. But it doesn't show the last email; it shows a bit up in the list. The reason is that the preview surface COVER the most recent emails in the list (as an overlay and therefore hiding the list). Annoying! If I select another directory on the left and then select the inbox directory again, then the latest mail IS visible in the list because the preview area is now UNDER the list, not covering it. It's been like this for months, are both users and developers blind who haven't seen this problem?

Hello ! I lost track of a few emails by doing the following: 1) I created a new folder in Thunderbird 2) I selected a few emails and dropped them in this new directory 3) I noticed that they were in the new directory, but grouped together in the same ‘discussion’. 4) I removed the grouping by discussion criterion and there were no more messages in the new directory, just the following message ‘No messages found’. 5) I've gone through all the directories, but there's no trace of these emails! ... => how do I retrieve these missing messages? Thanks for your help

On my wife's computer is a IMAP Email account. Cox moved our servers to Yahoo. Since then filter rules are set in Thunderbird, but they don't work on her computer. I have tried setting filter rules to work before or after determining as junk and deleting those listed in filter rules. I would prefer to see all junk deleted at the server level before reaching her computer, but that's not an option like it was with Cox Email. This works OK in my POP account, but on her IMAP account it creates a second JUNK subfolder under TRASH and lists all the spam that agrees with my filter rules. Nothing gets deleted. The filter rules have been changed to filter the JUNK folder instead of the INBOX and delete those files, but that doesn't happen! I have to move all the spam in the JUNK subfolder to the regular JUNK folder, then run each set of filter rules individually to move into trash. I can then delete the JUNK subfolder but it is automatically recreated.

I know we must use EITHER Filter Rules or Spam Assassin, but not both. I want to get rid of Spam Assassin because it looks like it's creating the problem, but I see no way to do that. Unchecking Spam Assassin in filter rules does nothing. In any case, I need a solution. Jim

I have a domain for a business and web hosting. Email accounts come with the hosting and I set up several. At some point, I began to get pop-ups asking for my logon credentials. Although they were annoying, I put up with them for a time. I thought a password problem might be causing it, so I changed the password and made sure it was the same both on the server and in Thunderbird. Eventually, this situation became more than a nuisance and (after saving the messages off-line) I deleted the email account from both Thunderbird and the server. This did not work and I still gat the pop-up messages! I have consulted with the web hosting support staff and they assure me that the account is no longer on the server. Obviously, there is some vestige of the deleted account in Thunderbird someplace and it is causing the program to attempt to sign in to the server to access the no longer existing account. This, in turn, causes the server to request the credentials for the deleted account, resulting in the pop-up messages. How do I get rid of this?
