Why, if I don't scroll or respond to Facebook, does Firefox display a flash "x-marks" shield and wipe out the menu bar?

I have a MacBook Pro, OS 10.5.8. Firefox (16.0.2) wipes out the menu bar and effects a screen freeze in Facebook and some sports sites if I do not actively refresh the screen. If I catch it in time it can be brought back to life by executing a screen close command (command w), otherwise it is a freeze and I have to quit the program. Sometimes I need to force quit and sometimes even shut down the computer and restart it in order to get back up and running. What gives?

It may be that Firefox 16 does not optimize the interactive page content that Facebook interface uses. I would recommend updating Firefox to the latest version to see if the performance improves. Update Firefox to the latest release
