On an XP PC, I had been running FF 42 and, while playing media, experienced a lot of crashes and add ons not working. Was suggested to upgrade to FF ESR (now running V 52.30) but have been, for a while, experiencing some plugin-container.exe problems (hangs and crashes) and FF creating two sessions of Firefox.exe (as seen in Windows Task Manager). I checked to see if there was another FF to which I could migrate and noticed there is a Firefox 55.0.2 . Is that more media friendly?

Firefox 52.3.0 esr is the latest Firefox version that runs on Windows XP. You would have to update to Windows 7 or later to use Firefox 55.

Current Firefox releases have multi-process windows enabled. You may see more Firefox processes running.

  • one process for the main Firefox thread (user interface)
  • one or more processes for content threads set dom.ipc.processCount

You can look at "Multiprocess Windows" to see the current multi-process state.

Firefox relies on built-in OS support to play media files via the HTML5 media player. On the Windows XP platform you do not have native support for playing MP4 files with the HTML5 media player.

You can try if the solution posted here to add support for playing MP4 files works for you.
