Delete function is almost non operative, ie Thunderbird 'seizes' for many minutes when trying to DELETE.

Delete function does NOT delete initially, it goes into 'Not responding' mode for many minutes. This issue is getting worse over the weeks. Any one any ideas please?? Alan O
