Where did my bookmark folders go with new update?
I installed the new Firefox update this morning and when I click on the bookmarks icon at the top my bookmark folders have vanished. the only bookmarks I have are my recently bookmarked ones.
Where did they go?

Note that there is a "Show your bookmarks" button (star with a bar below it) in the Customize palette that you can drag to the Navigation Toolbar.

You shouldn't drag the Bookmarks Menu button to the overflow are if that is what you were doing. This Bookmarks Menu button should be on a toolbar, normally the Navigation Toolbar, but other toolbars that accept icons like the Bookmarks Toolbar or the Tab bar may work as well. When you drag this Bookmarks Menu button in the overflow area then it behaved differently and doesn't show the bookmarks list.
i have been a Mozilla user for Y-E-A-R-S...and have always preferred it over google. However, this latest update that has JACKED with my bookmarks folder is RIDICULOUS. I've tried all the options listed in the "forum" and NONE of them have placed my folders back where they belong.
Is Mozilla turning into Google, whereby when they do some really stupid update code that doesn't work or provide a good customer experience and then IGNORE the pleas and cries of their consumers?
I think so. Seriously. How f***ing hard is it to add a patch update that brings bookmark folders back where they belong: In a place that's easy for people to find, without having to jump through hoops to do so?
I am mightly upset and have to spend minutes (that add up to hours, then days, then weeks) just to figure out where to find my bookmark folders. And guess what? This is time I CAN NEVER GET BACK!
Honestly Mozilla. And to think you guys have the nerve to ask people for donations, but not try to keep your consumers happy. I used to donate to your project. But am second-guessing my choice of staying with you.
PLEASE FIX THIS!

I too have repeatedly attempted to get my folders back where they used to be - I have had to give up too. Thankfully, I can now access them, but it means having a large part of my (already tiny) screen taken up with the Bookmark folders column down the left side of my screen instead of dropping down from the Menu Bar and then disappearing again quickly, which suits me very well. With my cheapo small computer, it is difficult to navigate my "floating" mouse pointer to close the column on the left side, (which sounds really petty, but believe me, sometimes it takes about 30 seconds to get it to go where I want it to go - that's another whole issue, which I won't bore anyone with) so I would GREATLY prefer to have the same dropdown of my Bookmark Folders to go back to where it was. Currently, all that drops down from that icon is "Recent Highlights".
How hard can it be to put our Folders back onto that dropdown????
Hi TaraB and jeanditi:
The new bookmarks menu button () should work the same way as the old bookmarks menu button (), which was the "right-half" of the inseparable star+book duo.
To add that button, either:
(A) Use the Customize panel (Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars) to drag the icon to the desired spot on the toolbar
(B) Use the method from Bookmarks in Firefox - section entitled: How do I add the Bookmarks Menu button to the toolbar?
- Click the "Library" button:
- Click "Bookmarks"
- Click "Bookmarking Tools"
- Click "Add Bookmarks Menu to Toolbar"
Once the button is on the toolbar, it should show the main level of the Bookmarks Menu (matching what you see when you use the Bookmarks menu on the top menu bar, give or take a few items at the top).
I think Windows users are suffering the most from not having this button on the bar by default because on Windows, the top menu bar is hidden by default (it's a Microsoft Windows platform convention). Users on Mac and Linux can just click the Bookmarks menu on the top bar like before.
If you ever need to use the top menu bar, you can
- Display it temporarily by tapping the Alt key or F10 key, or press Alt+b to drop the Bookmarks menu directly
- Turn on the bar full time from the toolbar list. That's available from any of these places:
- right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank spot on the tab bar (or the "+" button)
- (menu bar) View > Toolbars
On Windows, tap the Alt key to activate the menu bar temporarily. - in Customize mode > Show/Hide Toolbars (see: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars)
Hi. Lookit. None of what anyone is saying about the FOLDERS option of bookmarks works. And I don't think it's just "Windows" users. There is NO WAY - no option, no clicky thingy that says 'SHOW FOLDERS".
Drag/drop, options, shortcuts nor the "show all bookmarks" options do not help. I do not mean to be rude, but how hard can it be to give people A SIMPLE, EASY way to have their folders show up in bookmarks?
So, although I appreciate your effort in explaining options to this most vexing issue, it DOES NOT HELP. It requires that Mozilla develops another way to access folders and place them in the sidebar OR fix the code for this.

Hi jscher, Thank you. Finally, I have been able to add that star icon to my toolbar. I was never able to get that to go there before, so now again, I have my dropdown with my folders.
Thanks also to Tara who reopened this issue for me, I had all but given up.
I do hope that everyone else will now be able to regain the lost folders as it seemed to have affected quite a few users.
Thanks again.

Hi Tara, What jscher just suggested to add the star icon to my toolbar actually just worked!! I am so happy that you brought this up again as I had given up.
I sure hope it works for you!

Here are my icons now:

There isn't a separate button to Show Folders. I am attaching two screenshots, one of the Bookmarks menu from the top bar and the other of the Bookmarks menu from the Bookmarks Menu button. When you compare those on your Firefox, they should both have the same folders.
Thank you Jscher2000!
Why that was like pulling a tooth with a piece of dental floss is unknown to me!
I take not only my hat off to you, but praise the Heavens in great profusion and deep bows that you posted those screenshots!
May your cows produce much milk and beef and your camels have no fleas!

Hi TaraB, it's true, a picture is worth a lot of words, especially clumsy descriptions like "a star sitting in a tray"!
jscher2000...
Actually, it's worse than that and presents an existential challenge: Technology makes people dumb! LOL
I guess it is Case Closed now then?!!
Hi TaraB
the screenshot shows that you have dragged the "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" from the Bookmarks Toolbar to the overflow area on the Navigation Toolbar. When this item is in the overflow area then it acts as a button that opens the Bookmarks Manager (Library) with the Bookmarks Toolbar folder selected. All bookmarks buttons behave differently when you drag them to the overflow area and open either the Library (bookshelf) menu or the bookmarks manager that also named Library. These buttons work best when they are visible on the Navigation Toolbar.
Note that you can drag the flexible spaces that Firefox places around the address bar to the Customize palette to have more space for toolbar buttons.
Hi Cor-el.
Jscher2000 solved the issue for me with some great screenshots. Because trying to decode which icon is which and where to "drag it to" has been a real pain. Perhaps better written instructions from Mozilla? I think coders forget that not everyone on the planet can "read" the language easily.
