Thunderbird won't send emails unless I check for mail first, then it sends emails. What?

PLEASE READ ENTIRE QUESTION, NOT JUST THE FIRST PART!!! IF YOU ONLY READ FIRST PART AND SEND ANSWER, IT WILL NOT HELP ME!!! READ PAST THE ERROR MESSAGE!!!

I open Thunderbird, write an email, and hit send. It doesn't send, and gives me this:

"An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: Please turn on SMTP Authentication in your mail client, or login to the IMAP/POP3 server before sending your message. "

KEEP READING BEFORE RESPONDING: If I hit get mail FIRST, and THEN SEND, it sends the email. But I have to do a getMail first, otherwise it won't send any mail with the above error message.

If I leave Thunderbird open and it's been open for awhile after receiving and sending email, it will, once again, fail to send with the above message unless I do a GetMail.

I want to send without doing GetMails. Wassup?

Some email servers will allow you to send mail if you first get mail using a particular IP address, assuming you are who you were. They are few and far between these days as the security is particularly poor.

Your outgoing server is I guess set to not use a password, so when the get part is met your can send, all other times it complains about the lack of a password.

Tools menu (alt+T) > account settings >outgoing server (SMTP) > select the account > Edit and change the authentication to normal password.
