I have nearly a terabyte of .mbox files on external drives which I would like to use thunderbird to read through.

However, due to the size, my computer is unable to store all these files. Is there a way to use thunderbird to read the mbox files without storing them on my computer and instead keep them on the external drives?

For occasional viewing, you can copy mbox files (no extension) into the Mail/Local Folders location of your profile folder, while TB is closed. They will appear as folders under Local Folders when you restart TB. A better approach may be to use the LocalFolders add-on to define an additional Local Folders, besides the default one in TB, but point it to the external drive.
