can't shut down Firefox without using Force Quit

Firefox 3.6.9 on Mac OSX 10.5.8 will not close without using Force Quit doesn't matter what website I am on or what I am doing

This problem persists with Firefox 3.6.16.

Moreover, force quit itself, via cmd-opt-esc, may fail.

As of last night, I was able to force quit via Activity Monitor.

As of today, the cmd-opt-esc force quit hangs, and Activity Monitor does not show the Firefox process.
