I know this question was asked and answered for previous releases of Firefox, but I recently had to restore my PC and downloaded Firefox 9.0.1. I want to be able to type Amazon or IMDB or YouTube or UMiami in the awesome bar and have it take me directly to those websites instead of rerouting me to Google. I prefer not typing ".com", ".gov", ".edu", ".net", or ".org". I tried the fixes offered for Firefox 4.0 but it doesn't work for 9.0, the pop-up error I get reads: The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded. Please help!

You can modify the pref keyword.URL on the about:config page to use Google's "I'm Feeling Lucky" or Google's "Browse By Name".

Why do I have to redirect stuff to Google?! I want to be able to type Amazon in the address bar, press enter, and arrive at Amazon! Any other suggestions?

This is making want to downgrade to an older Firefox.

You can disable keyword search altogether to make Firefox only add a .com and if necessary add a .www in front if you do not want to use a Google (Lucky) search.

You can disable keyword search by setting the keyword.enabled pref to false on the about:config page.

I agree with Jillybean, man, I don't want anything more to do with Google than I have to. I wouldn't mind quite as much if there was, say, an "I'm feeling lucky" equivalent in Bing, or Yahoo, Ixquick, Hide My @$$, or any service that respects users' privacy and doesn't sell their search results to the feds. And you could put their link into the appropriate place in about:config.
