I cannot find the Tools Options Advanced Reading & Display in Thunderbird 38.1.0.

I would like to set that messages are marked as read with a slight delay as was possible earlier. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/configuration-options-viewing-messages#w_specify-when-messages-are-automatically-marked-as-read

Now this settings seems to be no longer available in the Tools Options Advanced Reading & Display... https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/advanced-panel-settings-in-firefox

I wonder whether I can set this somewhere else? Thanks for a suggestion! :)

We need to update that first article you linked to. And it needs some explanation that it refers to menus, not the hamburger button. And probably further expansion to incorporate the hamburger button.

Press the <alt> key to see the traditional menu. Or explore what is on offer under the "hamburger" button which is supposed to offer an alternative menu system.

Thanks for the quick response. I still did not manage to find this option in the "hamburger" button - I had tried to find it before I asked the questions as I read your replay to a similar question. Regarding the <alt> key, when should I have to press it? May be that questions sounds stupid but I simply do not know which menu is supposed to be open when I press the <alt> key. I tried to do this when being in the inbox, in the advanced options settings, in the tool setting ... also when freshly starting thunderbird. Many thanks for further details!

I suspect that this option has been moved recently. :-( I think it's now under Display|Advanced

(1) [≡]|Options|Options|Display|Advanced (2) [≡]|Options|Display|Advanced (3) Tools|Options|Display|Advanced

(1) The first "Options" (in italics) requires you to hover. The second "Options" needs a click. (2) Or you can click on the first "Options" rather than hovering. (3) Via the traditional menu.

Bah humbug. See why I so dislike this Application Menu thing? ;-)

Most of the legacy help for Thunderbird is based on the traditional menus which Microsoft set about removing back in Windows 7 and at the same time adding the Ribbon as the new menu.

If you ever have a hankering for the old menu, on a Windows or Linux PC, the <alt> key should temporarily display the old-style menu, if one is available. But I think you can already see it.

Since many of the applications I choose to use still use the old menu system, and I like consistency (which is after all why the GUI concept evolved) I prefer to have menus when they are available, as in Thunderbird and Firefox.

But this discussion is probably moot, as I suspect the real problem is that the item you were looking for has been moved. ;-)
