In web sites with large amounts of written information on the home page e.g.newspaper sites, the small script is so faint that I need to up the magnification to read it. This does not happen on Internet Explorer but I prefer using Mozilla. Is there any way of darkening the colour of the script from light grey to black?

You can enable ClearType system wide for all programs to make other programs like Firefox use it.

Control Panel > Display > Appearance > Effects: "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts"
