Why did FF just install a new upgrade to 9.01 without my consent even when I have "ask me what to do" checked?

More upgrade-itis fun from Firefox...

Given the numerous problems with FF upgrading like it is in some sort of a race to get the highest version number, I have made sure that FF would not upgrade without my consent. I made sure it was checked "ask me what to do." And I determined not to upgrade to any new version until it had been out for awhile. A good long while.

I was happily running v. 8

I close the browser about to shut down. I get a remnant dialog box even after the browser has closed saying " a script on this page has stopped working" and asking what to do. I clicked "continue" just to get it off my screen so I can shut down. Then I remembered something I wanted to do, restarted the browser, and it automatically installs v. 9.01

Why?

I don't want v. 9.01. I particularly don't want versions to install without my express consent, which I've not granted.

How did this happen? How do I stop it from happening in the future?

"ask me what to do" doesn't wait forever for an answer. If you miss the dialog and it moves behind the main Firefox window, or you ignore it altogether, the update will be installed without waiting for an answer.

That's bad behavior by FF, if that is the case. It is absolutely unacceptable and given the organization's recent stance on upgrading it does not seem coincidental.

The first poster gave me the clue on disabling FF from checking for ANY updates for the browser itself. I've done that.

My goal will be to upgrade about once a year. As a result of FF's overly aggressive and incessant updates, I feel I need to take strong action to stop this, which process has a tendency to create chaos with my add-ons. So, I guess their update policy has kinda backfired. My response now is no updates at all for the foreseeable future.
