Disabling ZoneAlarm firewall to update Firefox is not helping security.

A box about updating Firefox to v 9-something-something keeps showing up but it says a 'plugin' that is incompatible will be disabled until it can be made compatible. The plugin is identified as something with or in "ZoneAlarm". I do not want my firewall disabled so I have not allowed the upgrade.

Yet there is a Firefox version 10 available - Is that more compatible with ZoneAlarm? If so, is there any reason I should not upgrade to v10? I'm running XP on a Dell Optiplex 320 with a Pentium 4.

Apologies for not having exact version nbrs or the exact language identifying the plugin. (I'm an old guy and memory isn't so good.) I should have tried cutting and pasting the exact msg but I hope there is still enough info here for someone who knows about this to be able to help.

If not, I'll wait till the next time I see the upgrade box (on booting Firefox), copy it all, and come back with the specifics.

Many thanks.

Firefox wouldn't be disabling a firewall or any part of an anti-virus application, it only disables incompatible add-ons which are far from being necessary.

Contact ZoneAlarm support and ask about the availability of an update for that ZA add-on for Firefox. It's been almost 2 weeks since Firefox 10.0 was released - on Jan 31st.

Zone Alarm is far behind in making their toolbar compatible with Firefox. Only your Zone Alarm toolbar will be disabled. Your firewall and malware protection from Zone Alarm will function without the toolbar. The current Zone Alarm version is 10.1.079.000 and its toolbar is compatible only through Firefox 8.

Firefox has built-in malware protection for known malicious sites, similar to the Zone Alarm toolbar, they just use a different database:

Firefox also scans downloads when completed with your existing Anti-virus software:

Thank you, Safebrowser, that was very helpful. I don't use the ZA toolbar anyway.

Decide from my previous post if you really need the Zone Alarm toolbar.

As I said above, I do not use the ZA toolbar. I do not want any more toolbars.
