I used to be able to right click on a tab and move it to a new window. In Firefox 5 the tab moves to the new window, however the windo is non-responsive - can't move or close out.

Does that also happen if you tear off that tab by dragging the tab a little down in the browser window?
Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
- Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

Yes, it also happens when i tear of a tab by dragging it away from the browser. I also tried starting Firefox in safe mode with the extensions disabled and the problems persists.
You can try:
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See:
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)

I tried fixing the curroup_localstore.rdf using the safemode option. no success. I also tried creating a new profile also with no success. The only thing that seems wierd to me is that after all the extensions and add-ons are disabled, I can still see the roboform toolbar... even on a different profile.
I'm having the same problem. Tear off tab and that window freezes.
I've got the same problem. I try tearing off a tab but it doesn't get opened in a new browser window. A new browser window does open, but it's frozen and the tab I was trying to tear off stays put in the original browser window.
Very frustrated with this issue.
BrianJ, do you use Roboform Toolbar by chance?
Okulungisiwe
Oh man... yes, I do use RoboForm Toolbar.
I'm guessing from your question that's what's causing the problem. I'm going to be bummed if I have to choose between using RoboForm Toolbar and having the ability to move tabs to a new browser window.
What insight can you share with me about RoboForm Toolbar in Firefox 5?
Thanks for your help.
Unfortunately, i don't have any insight... I've just been "living with it" for the last few weeks. I don't know for sure that it's Roboform, but that is my suspicion as all three of the responders here have it installed and that seems to be the common thread. I also have the same problem on another computer (same setup). I guess the next question is this something that Mozilla addresses or Roboform?
Thanks for at least identifying what the probable cause of the issue is.
I've got a 7 month old computer and it's already giving me so many problems due to the OS and various software not getting along. What a major frustration!
Hopefully Mozilla or Roboform will get the issue figured out sometime in the near future.
I submitted a ticket with Roboform. I would encourage you to do it as well.
I've submitted a support ticket with RoboForm as well.
To anyone who has RoboForm and can't move an existing tab to a new browser window, I just received the following reply from RoboForm support (on July 22, 2011).
Hello, thanks for your message, we acknowledge the issue takes place when trying to move a tab to open it in a new FireFox window or cick "move to new window" in its context menu, the problem is under work now but it is hard to say how soon it would take to fix it. The issue seems to take place when only RoboForm toolbar is visible in FireFox so if you find it convinient to you, you can hide the toolbar via FireFox > Options and use Save Forms and Fill Forms RoboForm commands available in your FireFox context menu for a page, to manage Context Menu items added by RoboForm, click RoboForm Options > Context Menu.
