Last week I had a problem accessing my earthlink webmail with random popups on my vista desktop. Did a system restore and then accessed the same webmail from my xp laptop without problem. System restore fixed the desktop problem until this morning. Now I get the same problem on both my desktop and laptop machines. Had earthlink support connect to my computer to check the problem and it appears that firefox has been corrupted. The popup blocker has apparently been bypassed and ramdom popups redirect me away from the webmail. Accessing via internet explorer had no such issue. Before contacting earthlink, I did a system restore to a point where the system was not showing popups but the problem remained. IE does seem to have speed issues accessing the webmail but at least I don't get the popups that have returned to plague use of firefox on that site. I had an older version of firefox on the laptop and updated ti ver 31 and still have the popup issue so am at a loss to understand what happened.

It is possible that there is something in the profile that is bypassing the popup blocker. It is possible to do a Firefox Reset from the about:support page.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions and some Preferences.

  • Open websites will not be saved in Firefox versions lower than 25.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

For Firefox 29.0 and above:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. Now, a new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
  2. At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Reset Firefox"Button reset. Click on it.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Thank you.

What was apparently happening was an ad that popped up when I accessed the earthlink webmail directly. I had earthlink support look at my system and the tech fixed some security prompts which seemed to work and the problem has not recurred although some ads do still appear but not with the spin off popups that were causing the original problem. The tech did also access my webmail through IE which did not have the same issue although the ad did appear which is how we decided that firefox had the issue. After posting my message and returning to webmail using IE - i did my mail maintenance. When I got back on firefox, the trouble ad did not re-appear so whatever the tech did fixed that. Thanks for the response however - will save a link for future reference.

I will look into adblock plus. It may be a good idea to have it available. Thanks for the reference.
