My inbox stopped showing message content. I tried to copy the inbox content to another directory but T'bird crashed and when I reopened the inbox all was gone

I started having problems when sending emails. The reply address was not self-completing. The next day the message content was not displaying. Only the most recent messages were displaying fully. I noticed that messages I copied to other folders displayed properly. I decided to copy a month's worth of messages to an archive folder to see if this would help the problem. When I tried this Firefox appeared to crash and restart. When I looked at the inbox only the most recent emails were in it. Is there any way I can recover the lost mails? We usually keep up to a 1000 mails in the inbox folder and transfer the older mail month by month to archive folders. The last 5 years this has worked well for us. Thank you for any suggestions.

Thanks for the response. Perhaps I should have tried this originally, before trying to copy the messages to another folder. Unfortunately this suggestion does not cure the problem. But thanks anyway. Albert
