My tags were lost when uWaterloo recently updated their email system "Connect" with a newer Outlook Web App for access to Microsoft Exchange Server system. I work on OS10.11.5 It appears that other functions of Thunderbird stayed in tact, such as my tag definitions and the starburst that indicates an email has not yet been read. But the many emails in my live "connect" inbox have lost the tagging that I have applied. Of note, the emails that I had previously moved emails from the "Connect" cloud to the the "local folders" of my computer have retained their tags. How do I dig into the Thunderbird application to find the folders that hold my tag information?

The information was stored "in the cloud" with your mail. If you have lost data following the conversion of that server to a new software package you will need to discuss your issues with the supplier of that service. As you quite rightly point out the data Thunderbird has full control over (local folders) is complete and missing no information.
