I have set up a small, simple Intranet in our offices. The pages in the Intranet need to include links to local documents like Word files, Excel files, PDF files, etc.

I cannot get the links to work by clicking them. If I Shift-Alt-Click I get a message asking if I want to Open or Save the file. My code is:

<a href="file:///n:/folder/document.doc">Document Title</a>

Clicking the link results in no response from the browser. This also does not work in Google Chrome or Opera. However, it works in IE8.

I have researched the web and the only solutions I have found are related to accessing local files from the Internet, not locally. Nothing I have tried has worked.

Are there any error messages in the Tools > Error Console?

Firefox won't open .doc files from Word or other MS products and will offer to save the file or open with another application. IE can display such a file as being part of Windows and know about MS files from other MS applications, so you most likely can't use such a link in browsers other than IE.
