I removed my email account, then added it again. I noticed all my email folders are missing. I used pop3, so all my email were saved on the computer. how do I recover my emails?

Thanks in advance for your help.

If you delete an account then Thunderbird will not be looking at it. However, providing you have not removed it from the Profile folders then it will still be there and you can link it back again.

First - move any emails in that new pop account into 'Local Folders'.

check mail account is still there: Make hidden files and folders visible.

In Thunderbird

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  • click on 'show folder' button
  • a window opens showing your Profile folder.
  • Click on 'Mail' folder

You will see a list of your mail accounts, one of them will be 'Local Folders'. You should also see at least two more mail accounts. They will have the same name, but one of them will have extra number eg: '-1' included in the name.

click on mail account name to see if there are a load of folders of good size. make a note of the mail account name. It will probably be the one without the extra number.

Close window.

In Thunderbird:

  • Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings for the mail account
  • look at the bottom on the right side for 'Local Directory'.
  • put mouse cursor in the text box and use right arrow key to get to the far right, because part of that line will be hidden as the text box is not big enough.

The line should look something like this, but obviously the mail account name may not be the same: C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\yxxxxxxxx.default\Mail\mail.btinternet-1.com

You need to make the mail account the same as the one you just located in the Profile. If it has the -1 then edit to remove it eg: mail.btinternet-1.com becomes mail.btinternet.com

OR if you do not want to edit Click on the 'Browse' button locate the drectory of the mail account you saw in the Profile folder. eg: C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\yxxxxxxxx.default\Mail\mail.btinternet.com Click on 'Select Folder' Then click on OK to save changes.

Restart Thunderbird.
