ESCAPE KEY while looking at a mail item has always exited item and taken me back to the inbox. Thunderbird just updated and this no longer works. CTRL + W does the same thing, but THAT IS A PAIN!

Took me a while to figure out how to get it installed, but I finally managed. Thanks! So I must have had this on in the old version? It was an addon?
Yes, close on ESC was provided by an add-on that worked on TB 60, and the new one is based on the previous add-on.
