. . . now my whole set up is gone. When it opens, which takes forever, it wants me to set it up from scratch. It was setup and working fine prior to the update. I have read through a ton of matter on how to find this and that, recovery, migration and whatnot to no avail. So how do I get my setup back after this update?

This typically happens when an antivirus program intercepts an update, causing some corruption of the update. Your setup is in a profile, but Thunderbird apparently started with a fresh profile. If you click help>troubleshootinginformation, scroll down to profile folders and click 'about:profiles', you may see the prior profile listed. Your data would still be there but may need to be copied into the current profile.
