How to include another search engine in the built-in search engine list

more options

I am writing to propose adding Kagi as a default search engine option in Firefox. As a Firefox user, I believe Kagi's mission aligns well with Firefox's values and would be a positive addition for your users.

Key points: - Kagi is a privacy-focused, ad-free search engine - Its mission is to provide high-quality search results without tracking users or relying on advertising revenue - This aligns with Firefox's emphasis on privacy and giving users control of their data - Including Kagi would offer Firefox users an alternative to ad-supported search engines - It would demonstrate Firefox's commitment to promoting innovative, user-first web services

Could you please advise on the process for proposing a new default search engine? I would be happy to provide any additional information to assist in your evaluation of Kagi.

Thank you for your consideration. Looking forward ot hearing your thoughts.

Hi Luis, it looks like Kagi requires a subscription and, after some number of trial searches, one or more payments. The company probably should reach out to Mozilla to propose a partnership, which might start with a sponsored shortcut on the new tab page. This probably is the best place to start: https://www.mozilla.org/advertising/.

If you, as a Firefox user, would like to make a suggestion for the browser, Mozilla has a product suggestion site at https://connect.mozilla.org/. You could post this request there to get into the current feedback stream. Use the "Ideas" section of the site.

Hi Jefferson, thanks for your reply! I'm working on your suggestions.

There is a free trial period, after which users can choose to subscribe. This model provides an alternative to the common ad-driven approach, ensuring that the company's incentives are fully aligned with those of the users. As highlighted by the Google founders in their [1998 paper](http://infolab.stanford.edu/pub/papers/google.pdf), "The goals of the advertising business model do not always correspond to providing quality search to users.". Kagi is a user-first service.

Is this forum, or perhaps the Firefox product feedback forum, an appropriate place to engage with the Firefox team, aside from trying to connect through direct or indirect connections?

I suggested the other links because this is not really a support question.

You also could consider filing a bug (Request for Enhancement) with your proposed code on https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ to tee up the discussion.

To see how search engine extensions are built, you can refer to the ones currently included in Firefox: https://searchfox.org/mozilla-release/source/browser/components/search/extensions

The variation in parameters is based on the needs of the sponsoring site, as negotiated with Mozilla.
