The 'Open File' command on the 'File' menu does not work in Firefox 17.0 or 17.0.1 for any file type (e.g. PNG, MAFF, HTM). Last version of Firefox in which this worked was 16.0.2. The command now opens the initial dialog box, but clicking a suitable filename in that box does not do anything. I have now reverted to 16.0.2.

Are you getting any error msg or no. What happening when you click the "Open File" on the "File" Menu

Try to delete the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox Profile Folder to reset all file actions.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

You can also try to reset Firefox:

I get no message or error number code.

I now believe it is the Mozilla Archive Format add-on causing this problem. Both the current versions 2.0.7 and 3.0a2 give the problem with Firefox 17, but not with Firefox 16.

I have advised the add-on provider accordingly.

Files with image-type extensions can still be opened by using file associations. It's just the 'File Open' command that is malfunctioning.
