Hello,

Open Address in New Tab: Alt + Enter - from Location Bar or Search Bar

Yes, I know about alt+enter. But I want it to open in new tab by default. I know this can be done, as I have another computer with firefox that does it this way. I just don't know what I did on that computer to accomplish this.

Maybe an add-on or under-the-covers settings change? You can generate lists of your extensions and (many) modified preferences in text format for comparison:

Help > Troubleshooting Information

In the upper left corner, click Copy text to Clipboard, then you can paste into an email and send it to yourself on the other system for comparison.

Hi Elephan5

This is driving me crazy, i can't find the solution anywhere. Did you find out how to do this? I also have an older mac which can do this in firefox, i want to be able to control T to open a new tab in exactly the same url that i am currently using, it saves so much time when doing certain tasks. Safari can do this. My old Firefox can also do this. Any luck? I am going around in circles here, tried changing command values in the settings but it's not working, tried contacting mozzilla support but can never get to actually contact someone. Anyone ???

Hi izzzzzz6, to open whatever is in the address bar in a new tab, with the cursor in the address bar, you can press:

  • Windows: Alt + Enter
  • Mac: option + Return

This is from: Keyboard shortcuts - Perform common Firefox tasks quickly. (There's a drop-down on the left side to switch to a different OS if the article doesn't show you the correct one.)

If you prefer to click:

  • Windows: hold Ctrl and click the Go -> button
  • Mac: (I'm guessing) hold Command and click the Go -> button

Hi, thanks for the reply but i can never remember all these special keyboard shortcuts. There are thousands of them out there, all i would like it to hit the standard " command T " and have the tab open in the same URL I will try to get used to it and see if it sticks but due to restrictions like this in firefox i mostly use safari these days. So since i only use firefox from time to time i will probably forget the shortcut. I have heard there is a way of changing the firefox program so that it does this, i tried changing one of the settings in the about:config settings but it did nothing so i changed the values back again.

I'm sure there is a way

Hi izzzzzz6, maybe I misunderstood your question.

When you press command+t, Firefox used to display a blank tab, and then around Firefox 13 it switched to the current display of thumbnails for frequently viewed pages. If you had Firefox set to open the address of the current tab in the new tab, you probably were using an add-on for that. Could it have been Tab Mix Plus or another tab-related extension? I can't keep track of all the options, but the help page for TMP showing the zillion checkboxes is online here if you want to take a look: http://tmp.garyr.net/help/
