You don't have to use Yahoo in Firefox. You can use any search engine you want! Use the Search bar in Firefox and manage search engines

Firefox returns Yahoo as my search engine EVERY TIME I change it in the preferences. Turn off the Yahoo connection!!!

Please try the steps at How to fix preferences that won't save. Does that enable you to use something other than Yahoo?

Two. I have followed those steps and EVERY TIME I come back it has been changed back to STINKING YAHOO.

Three. the same thing happened on my wife's computer so she just stopped using your browser.

If Firefox won't save changes, you may have malware. Yes, even on a Mac.

Please check for and remove all "Spigot" and "Conduit" extensions and any other unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Command+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable/remove.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Does that allow you to regain control of your default search engine?

If that does not work, please check whether the preference is locked on this page:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste search and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Check the status for the browser.search.defaultenginename and browser.search.defaultenginename.US preferences. Are they "default", "user set", or "locked"? Usually locked indicates a more serious infection.

did both. No unwanted extensions and no extensions I didn't know what they are meant to do. preferences say "user set". quit software. opened software and got Yahoo as my default AGAIN.
