Ive tried defaulting fonts, unchecked all blocked images, reset firefox and removed all mods and still cant display bbc weather maps without getting "sorry, background map image is missing".

eg http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/2650225

It used to be fine. Now no matter what I do, it has missing images.

Any fix please?

Can you attach a screenshot?

Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot.

Make sure that you haven't enabled a High Contrast theme in the Windows/Mac Accessibility settings and that you allow pages to choose their colors in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Colors : [X] "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above"

You have an adblocker is that blocking it ?

BBC sites use css heavily so ensure javascript is enabled in Firefox and that nothing is blocking scripts. The linked weather map displays ok for me but as time passes the information will go out of date and disappear. Currently the weather graph shows the last six hours of weather to 0500 hrs Monday (Edinburgh time).

Hi, Ive disabled all addons and extensions.

Stock theme.

Javascript is on and I have no script blockers.

Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Colors : [X] "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above" '- Already done.

Attached are screenshots.

thanks,

andy

Looking at your screenshot; I think I would first off; think that sort of problem was either a site problem or a cache problem.

Obviously that BBC page is built up in stages from various elements. As other browsers can display it properly the problem is not with the BBC site. Also as others such as myself can see it using Firefox it would appear there is nothing wrong with Firefox.

Please create and try a new additional clean profile.

  1. ensure you are using default theme, all add-ons and ALL plugins disabled
  2. start the PC in Windows Safe Mode with net access
  3. using the new profile start Firefox Firefox's safe mode
  4. clear all cookies and all cache before each Firefox restart (remember this is a test profile so you are not loosing settings etc. in your ordinary profile)
  5. restart again in the clean profile with cache and cookies cleared, does restarting Firefox in such a manner help ?
  6. does the page you linked to update correctly ?
(same for similar BBC weather pages)
The BBC may not be minute perfect, but the weather pages contain graphical data on hourly predictions when you restart an hour or so later it would be expected that the page would update at least when manually reloaded.

Obviously you can use an alternative browser to see the weather forecast, but there is no reason normally why that should be necessary.

If images are missing then check that you aren't blocking images from some domains.

  • Check the permissions for the domain in the current tab in "Tools > Page Info > Permissions"
  • Check that images are enabled: Tools > Options > Content: [X] Load images automatically
  • Check the exceptions in "Tools > Options > Content: Load Images > Exceptions"
  • Check the "Tools > Page Info > Media" tab for blocked images (scroll through all the images with the cursor Down key).

If an image in the list is grayed and there is a check-mark in the box "Block Images from..." then remove that mark to unblock the images from that domain.

Make sure that you do not block third-party images, the permissions.default.image pref should be 1.

There are also extensions like Adblock Plus (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) and security software (firewall, anti-virus) that can block images and other content.

Not sure that is an admission of it being a server problem. Your linked article currently says:

"Missing Base map Image tiles

We have become aware of an issue that is affecting the background images of our forecast maps. Due to the inconsistent nature of the problem, it has proved difficult to replicate the exact cause but we are continuing in our attempts to fix this as soon as possible."

If the problem is not seen when using another browser it may not be a site issue.

I appreciate all the comments. I used all your suggestions.

The idea to create a new profile was a good one Im sure (didnt work as it happened), but Im reporting a danger creating anew throwaway profile in a directory that you may use. I created one on my desktop, it placed lots of files all over the desktop (not in a tidy directory) and worse, when I deleted the profile, it deleted EVERYTHING on my desktop irretrievably. Arrghhh.... never mind.

I think the problem did lay with the BBC servers as the maps work fine now all of a sudden.

Again, thanks for the suggestions. Appreciated guys.

Regards,

Andy

Glad it is working again.

Sorry I did not explicitly warn about profiles. I some times suggest never deleting or even renaming profiles, but instead only deleting the shortcuts or icons.

The reset option may be safer in that it does not have such a danger, but that does itself remove information, in a way that is not simple to reverse.

The profile instructions I linked to do contain a cautionary note:

Warning: If you choose your own folder location for the profile, select a new or empty folder. If you choose a folder that isn't empty and you later remove the profile and choose the "Delete Files" option, everything inside that folder will be deleted.
