My Thunderbird account gets its emails via an outlook office 365 email account. Every few months Thunderbird rejects my password and asks me to re enter my password When I re enter it this message appears

Login to server outlook.office365.com with username derek@hawkers351.com failed.

I used to think this was the outlook passwords expiring but when I log onto my outlook email it all works fine. To get back into Thunderbird I have to change my password in Outlook and then update it in Thunderbird a bit of a laborious task.

Is there a reason why thunderbird does this?

many thanks for your responses....

Thunderbird is only a messenger. That is, Thunderbird is not rejecting your password; Thunderbird is just reporting to you the response it received from the server. This may be a security aspect of the account, wanting periodic password change.

Thanks So you mean outlook is asking for the password through thunderbird? As I can log onto outlook directly ok I assume its an issue between the two bits of software being 100% compatible?

I can't be sure, but several email hosts have different requirements for password on PC vs password online. Gmail and Yahoo are examples of that.

Thanks David. I'll look into it. I might just have to start using outlook thoughI much prefer the thunderbird interface.

Hi Andy! Are you using two factor authentication on your account? Because in that case you should use an application password instead of your "regular" password.
