I click on the Firefox icon to get online to surf the web. Clicking on the icon no longer works nor does IE can anyone direct me how to fix this. Also is there another way to get online without either one of these?

Sorry to hear about the crashes. If you are getting the Mozilla Crash Reporter form, your Firefox may have logged some data that would help track down the cause of the problem. You can submit that data to Mozilla and share it with forum volunteers to see whether it points to the solution. Please check the support article "Firefox crashes - asking for support" for steps to get those crash report IDs from the about:crashes page, and then post some of the recent ones here.

Also and/or meanwhile, could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any less crashy?

I'll venture one guess at this point... I'm assuming you posted from a different system where Firefox is working normally. Does the system with the problem also have Norton installed? The reason I ask is that Norton users are having nearly instant startup crashes if they also have either of the Applian Technologies programs Freecorder or Replay Media Catcher.

Since presumably you don't want to switch away from Norton, you can remove or deactivate the Applian software as follows:

(1) Uninstall & reboot

If you have either of those programs and it isn't essential, try uninstalling it and then restarting Windows to ensure that none of its components are left running.

Will Firefox start normally after that?

(2) Prevent auto-startup

If you prefer not to uninstall the program, a few other users said using the msconfig program to prevent FlvSrvc.exe from running at startup bypassed the problem.

See: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/using-system-configuration

You still may need to reboot to unload the software from your current Windows session.

Was that relevant?

The System Detail list shows that you run an older Firefox version that is no longer supported with security updates.

  • It is important to update Firefox and add-ons to the latest versions to get all security fixes.

Please update to the current Firefox 41.0.2 release.

Thank you for the reply. I posted on my laptop which is working fine. Both lap top and desk top have Norton 360 Premier. Firefox doesn't even try to load neither does IE. So getting online to update my firefox is impossible. Tried the shift key while clicking to start Firefox that didn't do anything. Will try your next suggestion later tonight when I can concentrate on the task. Will post my results.
