My University mail account is about to be shut down at the University. What happens if I remove this account from Thunderbird? do I loose all old messages? contacts in this account?

Contacts hat are in your Thunderbird address book are on your local drive and will remain. If you had an address book on the schools server you need to work that out.

Make folders under the Thunderbird Local Folders account and move the messages here. Then they are on your local drive and not associated with the mail account. Message still in folders under the email account will disappear with the account.

IMAP mail. IMAP mail keeps the messages on the server. Make sure you get any messages you want to keep into Local Folders while you still have access to the mail server. If not, they will be gone.
