Firefox and all other open tabs/sites slow down tremedously when I have a particular website open.

Whenever I'm on the front end OR back end of a paricular client website, Firefox and another websites in other open tabs slow down and hang up TREMENDOUSLY. Scrolling is horrible, clicking on anything takes forever...even typing/entering data trails far behind my actual typing speed. I'm not sure what is causing this nor how to fix it. Any ideas? Again, this only seems to happen with one particular website. I HAVE checked this particular website on other browsers such as Safari and Chrome and am NOT experiencing the same. It just seems to be when viewing in Firefox only. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks! Website is a Wordpress website...one of MANY I have built over the years for various clients. Do you observe this with even one tab open on the site, or do problems begin when there is more than one tab open? Just wondering is there might be an interprocess communication issue among tabs.

And, of course, "the usual":

If a site is generally known to work in Firefox, these are general suggestions to try when it stops working correctly:

Cache and Cookies: When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes. If you do not see the number going down on the page, you can reload it using Command+r (Windows: Ctrl+r) to check progress.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or "i" icon in the address bar, then the ">" button, then More Information, and finally the "View Cookies" button

In the dialog that opens, the current site should be pre-filled in the search box at the top of the dialog so you can remove that site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Testing in Firefox's Safe Mode: In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the option/alt key when starting Firefox. (Windows: hold down the Shift key instead.)

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Thanks so much for your quick response, jscher2000, but, unfortunately none of those things helped. In fact, after I tried viewing in Safe Mode, Firefox hung up completely...I got the colored wheel of death (on Mac) and I had to force quit FireFox all together.

The website is http://smartbothub.com/ ... maybe you can tell me if you're experiencing the same sort of issues when viewing? It might help to take this troubleshooting session into a different direction if you end up experiencing the same issues as I do. I look forward to hearing back.

Exactly, FredMcD. And it will also freeze any other sites/tabs you have open as well... or even popups for that matter. But this does NOT happen when viewing the site on Safari or Chrome ... so I'm lead to believe it is some issue with Firefox only. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot or fix?

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache.

  • Clear the Cache and
  • Remove Cookies

Warning ! ! This will log you out of sites you're logged in to. You may also lose any settings for that website.

Type about:preferences<enter> in the address bar.

  • Cookies; Select Privacy. Under History, select

Firefox will Use Custom Settings. Press the button on the right side called Show Cookies. Use the search bar to look for the site. Note; There may be more than one entry. Remove All of them.

  • Cache; Select Advanced > Network. Across from

Cached Web Content, Press Clear Now.

If there is still a problem, Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). While you are in safe mode;

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration in Firefox. Since this feature was added to Firefox it has gradually improved but there are still a few glitches.

You will need to restart Firefox for this to take effect so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.,) and then perform these steps:

In Firefox 54 and below:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and select Options (Windows) or Preferences (Mac, Linux).
  2. Select the Advanced panel and the General tab.
  3. Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
  4. Close Firefox completely and then restart Firefox to see if the problem persists.

In Firefox 55 and above:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and select Options (Windows) or Preferences (Mac, Linux).
  2. Select the General panel.
  3. Under Performance, uncheck Use recommended performance settings. Additional settings will be displayed.

  4. Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
  5. Close Firefox completely and then restart Firefox to see if the problem persists.

I think that there is a problem with some jQuery script that modifies the page CSS or does some animation. I can scroll fast if I disable the page style.

Thanks for all the info, Fred! I've already done all those things, previously, with the exception of "using hardware acceleration when available"...so I updated that...but still didn't help. NOTE: I was not able to access/change the content limit drop down for some reason.  :o(

cor-el, are you experiencing latency issues with other open browser tab/pages, too, when you have smartbothub.com open in Firefox? Or ONLY on that website? I don't understand why this would be a problem on Firefox, but not on Chrome or Safari? Any thoughts re: that?

I tested the website with multi-process enabled and disabled and this only seems to happen when multi-process is disabled.

In a profile with all legacy extensions disabled I'm not seeing any performance issues when I scroll the page.

The Web Console shows: This site appears to use a scroll-linked positioning effect. This may not work well with asynchronous panning; see https://developer.mozilla.org/docs/Mozilla/Performance/ScrollLinkedEffects for further details and to join the discussion on related tools and features!
