I ran the firefox 7 update, and afterwards, was unable to start firefox. Even running in safe mode (from command line via firefox -safe-mode) did not work. I get the crash dialog immediately when trying to run.

-> Close Firefox

  • click Firefox button and click Exit (OR File Menu -> Exit)
  • OR press CTRL + ALT + DEL keys to open Task Manager -> Processes tab -> right-click firefox.exe and click End Process Tree -> close Task Manager

-> Start Firefox in Safe Mode by holding down SHIFT key while starting Firefox

  • As an alternative method, use Win + R key combination and enter one of the following in the Windows Run box:
    • firefox -safe-mode
    • "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -safe-mode
    • "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -safe-mode

-> Firefox Safe Mode window will appear -> DON'T SELECT ANY OPTIONS, just click Continue in Safe Mode

Check and tell if its working while you are using Firefox Safe Mode.

Starting in safe mode did not change the behavior. Still crashes immediately.

Upgrading to 7.0.1 did not fix this issue. Turns out it was this bug: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=680927

Fixed it with the workaround in comment 34 in the link above.
