I have two gmail accounts, both have the Server Type: IMAP Mail Server at the top. Server Name: pop.googlemail.com port 995

The error message is " Mail server imap.googlemail.com is not an IMAP4 mail server"

Another Google account shows Server Type: POP Mail Server Server Name as pop.googlemail.com Port 995

This works fine.

How can I change the Server Type to POP. Thanks for any solution to this problem. Regards

You can't change an account between POP and IMAP just by changing the server or settings. The account has to be added from File/New/Existing Mail Account.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Convert_a_POP_account_to_a_IMAP_account

Copy the current IMAP account mail to Local Folders, confirm the copy, then remove the account from Account Settings, Account Actions, then add the account as POP.

Hi, Sorry the link does not work. I tried creating Local Folders and that does not work.

I can see "Setting up your Existing Email Address" and get a green tick on the settings, but when I click done, get the error message " Unable to log in at the server. etc etc. But I can login at gmail.com ok

re :'I have two gmail accounts, both have the Server Type: IMAP Mail Server at the top. ' Server Name: pop.googlemail.com port 995

It sounds like you originally created these accounts as IMAP, but then entered the server settings for a POP account, so it's not going to work. Hence the error message. If you want them to work as imap accounts then you need to use imap server settings.

If you do not want imap accounts then you need to create them again and this time, set up as POP and use pop server settings. Just like the additional gmail account you mention below. But first you need to make sure you have copied over emails to 'Local Folders' mail account, then remove the imap accounts and finally create the new existing mail account as pop - see below for more details.

re :Another Google account shows Server Type: POP Mail Server Server Name as pop.googlemail.com Port 995

This should be working ok because you set it up as pop and used pop server settings.

If you have any emails in those Server Type: IMAP accounts which are using wrong server settings, then you need to get them out of those imap gmail accounts and store them in the 'Local Folders' mail account. re: I tried creating Local Folders and that does not work. You do not actually create 'Local Folders' account because it is a special account created by default. It will be below your accounts in the Folder Pane and contains the 'Outbox' folder. You create new folders in that 'Local Folders' account and then 'Copy' emails from the imap account folders and paste them into the folders you created in the 'Local Folders' mail account. I've attached an image below which is an example of a Folder Pane - it shows the 'Local Folders' mail account at the bottom below all the mail accounts.

Then you remove the Imap accounts. See image below as guide. In 'Account Settings'

  • select the imap mail account name
  • click on 'Account Actions'
  • select 'Remove Account'

Restart Thunderbird.

Then create the new existing mail accounts for those gmail email addresses and this time make sure you select POP and use pop server settings. 'Menu app icon' > 'New' > Existing mail account Enter name, enter email address, enter password, select to remember password, click on 'Continue' By default Thunderbird will auto look for an IMAP account. If there is a POP option select it otherwise.... click on 'Manual config' Select pop as server type and make sure the server settings are for pop account User name should be your full email address click on 'Retest' Once ok click on 'Done' to create.

re :Hi, Sorry the link does not work. Not sure what's going on but I've not been able to access any webpages on that http://kb.mozillazine.org server all day. So that would explain why you cannot get any info at that link.

I've added this link which may help.

This gives images that will help.

Hi,

Great reply and thank you. Unfortunately I still have a problem.

I can get emails using gmail.com.

Here is what I see in Thunderbird. I don't see anything like "Local Folders"

The image of Folder Pane does not show whether there is a vertical scrollbar hiding something below, so I'm assuming there is no scrollbar and what you posted is what you are seeing.

I'm assuming you are using version 78*, but those icons for folders must have been added via an addon perhaps 'Phoenity Icons'.

This makes me wonder if you have another addon that hides 'Local Folders'. Did you install another addon called Hide Local Folders for TB78++ version 1.0.1 ? https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/hide-local-folders-for-tb78/?src=ss If yes, then that would explain why you cannot see it. To get the folder 'Local Folders' visible again, deactivate or deinstall this Add-on.

Hi, Many thanks for your support.

I don't use Hide local Folders, I disabled all the Add-ons and still them.

I can see the emails on gmail.com. Should I just delete my local Thunderbird accounts and start again?
